STUDY DESTINATION DOUBTS
While the US leads the world in top universities, followed by the UK, Germany, Canada, and Australia, choosing the best country depends on your preferences. You can choose based on the following parameters:
Education system:
The USA tops this list as it has produced the highest number of noble laureates. It homes 13 of the 50 best universities in the world with the highest number of employability. The educational system is inspired by research and innovation. Classroom participation and critical thinking are at the core of their philosophy. Business, Computer Science, Finance, and Media/Communication are popular programs among Pakistani students in the USA.
Ease of Visa:
The UK has the friendliest policies for granting visas to international students. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, the UK has been open and welcoming. They have increased visa acceptances and prioritized vaccination of students from abroad. While many countries still have borders closed, the UK has planned to open campuses fully by September 2021 due to a successful vaccination drive.
Budget:
Among all the top 5 countries listed above, Germany is the most affordable. When sitting down to calculate tuition costs and living costs, you could sell your arm and leg, and it still will not be enough. However, such costs in Germany are lesser, and it promises high living standards.
Post Study Work Visa:
Country | Post Study Work Visa Length |
USA | 12 to 24 months |
UK | 2 years |
Germany | 18 months extendable |
Canada | 3 years maximum |
Australia | 2, 3, and 4 years |
All the countries above offer post-study work visas.
USA: Offers up to 24 months of staying back for work after studies are completed.
UK: Offers a 2-year post-study work visa.
Germany Offers 18 months post-study work and residence permit.
Canada: Offers a maximum of 3 years post-study work permit.
Australia: Up to 4 years of staying back and working in Australia.
Job Opportunities:
Availability of jobs will depend on how well you choose your course of study, irrespective of the country. For this, you will need to see what kind of industry is situated near to your university. For example, you choose to do marine engineering, but investing is useless if there is no industry (or even a port!) nearby. Does your university enjoy research or employment ties with nearby names in the industry? If yes, this will ensure better career prospects than anything else.

Canada and Australia are the most immigration-friendly countries of all. Here is a breakdown of the permit in both countries.
Canada
- Your course/program needs to be more than 8 months long to be eligible for a work permit. In other words, programs less than 8 months long are not eligible for a work permit. You will have to leave the country immediately after you finish your studies.
- For programs that are 9-24 months long, the permit is issued for the same length as the duration of the program. So, for example, if your MS was 2 years long, you are permitted to spend 2 more years in Canada to study.
- For programs over 24 months long, like bachelor’s programs, a maximum of 3 years long work permit can be issued.
AustraliaCourse Work Permit Length Bachelor’s Degree 2 Years Master’s Degree 2 Years Research-based Master’s Degree 3 Years Ph.D. 4 Years
We are going to categorize education systems on the following basis:
1. research and innovation facilities
2. graduate employability.
USA
The USA tops this list. This is because the educational system composes of classroom participation and critical thinking. Business, Computer Science, Finance, and Media/Communication are popular programs that Pakistani students pursue in the USA.
UK
Closely followed is the UK, home to 18 of the top 100 best universities in the world. Pakistani students like to pursue programs like Sociology, Social Sciences, Law, Business, Computer Science, and Media/Communications in the UK.
Germany
A leader in innovation and world-class research, Germany is on #3. It houses 12 of the best universities in the world. Engineering, Business Studies, Computer Science, Hotel & Tourism Management, and Media Communications are the popular courses for Pakistani students to pursue in Germany.
Canada
Canada’s high-ranking universities are situated in Toronto, British Columbia, and Montreal. A popular destination, Pakistani students, like to pursue postgraduate diplomas in Business Management, Media, Engineering, Computer Science, and Hospitality.
Australia
Australia is another leader in higher education, with top universities like Monash and Australian National University. Pakistani students popularly pursue courses like Accounting, Master of Business Administration (MBA), Health Care, Information Technology, and Hotel Management in Australia.
Consider the following EXTREMELY important things:
1. The return on investment.
Simply put, this is the cost of degree right now vs. the expected salary in that country.
2. Job opportunities in your country of choice after you finish the course.
For this, you will need to see what kind of industry your university is situated near. For example, you choose to do marine engineering but if there is no industry (or even a port!) close by, there is no use investing. Is your university close to big names in the industry? Does your university enjoy research or employment ties with nearby names in the industry? If yes, this will ensure better career prospects than anything else.
3. Demand in Pakistan in case you return.
You need to consider this scenario of returning if nothing works out. If your course of choice is not in demand in your home country, you will likely end up with a lot of debt and an unhappy experience.
The easiest way to make sure that all three criteria are met is to consult an expert. At GoGetters, we have all studied abroad from top universities in USA like Stanford, Creighton, and New Mexico Highlands University. We have worked in Turkey and presented papers in Thailand. And now, we counsel students just like you make investment in the right courses. Feel confident booking an appointment with us by clicking here.
